SAN DIEGO (December 16, 2016) – The Media Arts Center San Diego announced Fashion Valley Mall, a Simon property, as the Presenting Sponsor of the 24th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival and unveiled its 2017 festival poster at a special event on Thursday, December 8th at Border X Brewery. Fashion Valley, San Diego’s premier shopping destination, will host the 24th annual festival that celebrates Latino film and culture from Thursday, March 16th to Thursday, March 26th, 2017. Over 22,000 people from around the world are expected to attend the 11-day festival celebrating Latino film, art, music and food.
“Fashion Valley is honored to return as presenting sponsor of the 2017 San Diego Latino Film Festival”, said Lourdes Menendez, Director of Marketing & Business Development at Simon Fashion Valley. “The Festival is an important platform for diverse content makers and film lovers alike and an event we look forward to every year”.
Film festival founder, Ethan van Thillo, states “It is so important to have companies support the arts and cultural events these days. Without the support of Simon Fashion Valley, the film festival would have a difficult time presenting these wonderful movies to San Diego – Baja California audiences”.
In addition to announcing San Diego Latino Film Festival’s Presenting Sponsor, the 2017 poster was unveiled that will be the face and inspiration behind the festival. A selection committee composed of San Diego designers, artists and marketing professionals reviewed and voted for the winning poster. The winner, Jatuporn Phummai from Thailand, received a $1,000 prize for his entry and his design will be featured throughout the festival.
Jury member, Patricia Cue, a graphic design Professor from San Diego State University states, “It was a true challenge to select the winning poster this year. The enthusiastic response from designers all over the world yielded more than 300 hundred submissions that represented Latino Culture and its films in many creative ways. The jury, integrated by local graphic designers, educators, and festival organizer selected the design Movies to Moving by Phummai as the winner for its colorful palette and dynamic composition, but mainly for its unique and whimsical interpretation of a classic icon we can all relate to”.
When asked what was his inspiration for the artwork, Phummai mentioned that he wanted to create a connection between San Diego’s Latino Culture and Films. In this colorful dress, celebration, movement and excitement are represented through the dancing film reel. Moreover, the ’24th San Diego Latino Film Festival’ type was inspired by Mexican wood carved writing.
